DuPage Angler Darkstar With A Healthy 4.5 Pound Aurora Bass
I was out in my jon boat with my friend Dave. We were trying to get him his first bass of 2013. We were fishing Lake Patterson, a catch and release lake in Aurora, IL. I've heard there are good bass in Lake Patterson but I hadn't caught one over 3# there yet. The lake weeds-up pretty badly making shore fishing difficult to impossible by mid-summer. Fishing pockets in the weeds was the only way to go. My trolling motor strained at times and I had to stop and rip weeds from the front of my motor. I hoped I could connect with a bass to make all this trouble worthwhile.
I cast a chartreuse and white Z-Man chatterbait with a Yum chunk-craw trailer to give it girth out to the edge of a hole in the weeds. I counted the lure down and began my retrieve. My medium power casting rod bent and felt like I'd hooked a big chunk of weeds. I did a side-sweeping hookset to pull the lure loose when the weeds began to wiggle and pull. I still had my Abu Garcia baitcasting reel set up with loose drag from last week's blue catfishing trip and this fish pulled a good bit of drag and bent my rod down and stuck to the bottom. 30# Power Pro didn't yield and I got the fish to the surface and netted it. She weighed 4.5# on my Boga Grip scale and was chunky, healthy, and had the fantastic bug-eyes that big bass all have. Lake Patterson will be on my list to hit with a frog lure come summer but today the chatterbait got me the fish!
