The plan was to put in my Kayak, but the 20+ knot wind and DuPage Angler Pondboy convinced me otherwise. So I have to put on the weighted slip float and try to cast through the howling wind and work for my catches. I have about 18 minnows left in the bucket from our LaSalle trip and that usually goes a long way. But on this day, I am losing them to the fish. I've lost 6 in a row up to this point. I know the crappies are there and hitting very light, but the wind is making line management a nightmare and I' am missing on my hook sets.
It is frustrating to see the float scoot across the pond against the wind and coming up empty (I've tried various way of hooking the minnows) because the hook set just isn't the same with cross wind gusts up to 30+ knots blowing. After feeding half of my minnows to the fish, I tie on a 1/8 oz jig and put on a 2.5" Gulp! minnow and hurl it out as far as the wind allows. Once again, the float scoots across the pond, the hook set is still a problem but the position of the hook was so much better with the Gulp! minnow and I was rewarded with this nice 11.5 inch beauty. I send her home and made a date to meet again in October. Can't wait!
