On Monday, 5/2/2011 at 11:00 a.m. I went to Mallard Lake forest preserve. My usual spot was taken so he went to my next preferred fishing spot. I was going to fish with a rattle trap, but I usually have my second pole out with a golden roach. Using golden roaches on a slip bobber has paid off for me over the last two years. I set the depth of my slip to 2.5ft and threw it, no more than three feet from the shore, where I know there is a five foot hole. I started tying my rattle trap on when I noticed my bobber was gone. I picked my pole up and set the hook.
The fish gave me big enough fight for the guys at my favorite spot to see me pull him in. After I measured the fish I ran it over to the guys at the other point. They were nice enough to take a picture for me and gave me a hand shake when I released the fish. I continued fishing after that with my rattle trap and golden roaches, but that was my only fish of the morning.
