Back in my UW Madison days, we ice fished the Mendota Chains often. On a day where we were in to a bunch of perch, a old man near by was pulling a few 20"+ walleyes from the hole. I went to see how he was doing it and all he said to me was "Son, get your self a dead stick and a put a minnow on it.". Getting back on the ice this winter, the first thing that came to my mind was I gotta set up the dead stick. At Harrier Lake, I set up the dead stick and left it along. As I was jigging a spoon, I notice a few light tap on the bobber, and it went down very slowly. I pick up the stick thinking that I have a crappie or a small walleye on. When i tighten the line, the drag went off like mad. My heart is racing now, I was thinking a big walleye like those the other had caught earlier. After a couple of minutes of battling this creature, I saw it's mouth filled the 6 inch hole. WOW! A big LMB! Quickly, I grab the fish and ask SoonerBass to take the picture, guesstimate that it was about 3lb, text it to Pondboy (who was in the green shelter behind me), then send the fish back home. What an awesome way to end the ice season!
