DuPage Angler Lands His First

 DuPage River Smallie While

Wading

DuPage Angler News Room - DuPage River

After getting skunked 2 days in a row, I decided to give fishing a rest for a little while. My ego needed a little time to recover. Wilks19 had asked if I was up for fishing on Sunday. After thinking it through that it had been a week and a half since I last fished and getting the green light from my wife, I was in.

I talked to Wilks Sunday morning and we set up a time to go out IF it wasn‘t storming. He had softball practice at 11:00 and was not quite sure how long it would last. We played it safe and said we would meet up around 2:00. Today was the day to go and hit the DuPage for some smallies. I am still new to river fishing, so I did not expect to kill it out there today, but I remained positive we would do well. I got to the spot we picked to meet up and there were already 2 cars sitting there. One guy was getting set up to bank fish and the other was nowhere to be seen. I talked to the young guy that was getting set up while waiting for Wilks. He said he likes fishing this particular area quite a bit. I was happy to hear that. Wilks showed up, we got on our waders, grabbed our gear and we were in the river to catch some smallies. I always seem to forget to look at my surroundings when I am in the river. I make the assumption that I can just make a cast and let it fly. First cast, into the tree I went. My jighead wrapped around the branch and I knew then, it was a goner. I got set up again and we went on fishing.

The area was mushy underfoot and I kept bringing in clumps of weeds cast after cast. Wilks told me about a creek just up stream from where we were. We headed that way. We got to the creek mouth and I was tossing my 3” Producto Spring Grub in pearl white into the creek. I felt a smack and my drag started going. I was pumped. I have never caught a fish while actually in the water. This bronze back jumped right in front of me. I had it right there and when I went to grab it, she made one final jump and was gone just like that. Wilks had warned me prior to our outing how tough it is at first to land a fish while wading. I had brought along a net, but in the heat of the moment I forgot about it and didn’t use it.

Wilks was on shore trying to unsnag himself from a tree he had cast into. He yelled over and said it counts. I don’t count fish unless I can actually hold them. River 1 Chuck and Brad 0. A couple of casts later, I felt another one on my line. This one was a giant. As I was fighting her, I kept thinking don’t forget the net. I got her in close and I was able to net her. Wilks had to run back to his truck to retie, so he was not able to take my picture. My camera was in my shorts pocket, inside my waders. I had to get a pic of this beast. I waded to shore so I could gain access to my camera. Here is the pic of the first smallmouth bass I caught while wading.

Thank guys! I will say, I am having a blast wading the river. I need to get out there more to do some exploring. I just cannot seem to stay away from the ponds though. I think this summer I will be hitting the river a lot more. Fluke, a lot of my outings are last minute. I do a lot of fishing during my lunch though, so if you ever get a day off and are around the Bolingbrook area, let me know. We will have to plan a day over the weekend to fish. A lot of my weekends are packed though, so it might be tough to hook up. Yesterday was the first time fishing with Brad in a couple of months. Getting old and having kids is rough. Haha!

Great fish man! Let me know when you and Wilks are heading out to a pond this week, I will see if I can meet you out there. I haven't had the chance to tests your baits yet...but I know I will be getting into some hefty fish with them soon!

Way to go Chuck!!! That's a beautiful bit of bronze from the DuPage river!!!

Wading the river is the key to big bronze and you're going to get better and better at it as you go!!

Congrats on the COTD!!!
