DuPage Angler Scores Big Bass

 At Whalon Lake

DuPage Angler News Room - by DuPage CSimon

I took three days off of work this week as my oldest daughter Stephanie is on spring break. I wanted some days to be able to do some thing together with the family. Unfortunately, Steph caught the same bug the rest of us in house had. She does not seem to have it as bad as us, but she has a fever, sore throat, and runny nose. We headed over to my in laws today as my sister in law is in town from FL. We didn’t really do anything because of Steph having a fever. Before leaving for my in laws though, I grabbed one rod and some basic stuff just in case I was able to get out. Well the “just in case” happened and I did get out. I decided to hit up Whalon Lake again for the second day in a row. I had hit it yesterday during my lunch break and managed two little LMB. I wanted to try it again. I had found a spot on the river I wanted to try while walking back to my car yesterday. It was probably a good 10’ down to the river and I didn’t have time to check it out yesterday. Today, that was the first spot I hit. I was using the ever famous Producto spring grub. Only took a couple of casts pulling through the flowing water and I was able to catch my first smallie of the year.

I wound up getting a snag and broke my line off. It was time to go hit the Lake. I walked to the same spot I fished yesterday. I tied on a Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap in Natural Craw. The wind was blowing pretty fierce out of the West, so I figured this had to be the ticket. A few casts in, my hunch was right because I nailed my first LMB of the day. He was a little guy, but a fish nonetheless and fun to catch. I was able to connect with another LMB. The second one was a little bigger, and it was really dark for some reason. I wish I had gotten a pic of it, but didn’t think about it until after I had released it. DOH! A few casts later I felt the trap get nailed. I knew I had a pretty nice bass on the line, but was really surprised when I landed it. It was a 16” smallie. I went a little Ike when I brought this one in. I was super pumped.

The very next cast the trap got nailed again. I was battling this one pretty good, but all of a sudden it came unbuttoned. Sadly, I didn’t get to see what it was or how big it was. It was a fun fight though. The very next cast after that one, I nailed this pig:

She was 18” and full of eggs. She put up one heck of a fight too. All in all I was out for 45 minutes and managed 2 smallies and 3 bucket mouths. One on the Producto grub and the rest on the Rat-L-Trap. And to think, I almost didn’t grab the trap before leaving the house, But I sure am glad I did. Thanks for looking!

That 22.5" smallie was just this year. I have several bass in the 3 and 4 lb range from there...its a great fishery. Just way way too much fishing pressure and poachers there.

MWolf caught a measured and weighed 6# smallie out of Whalon last spring I think?

Pay attention when shad are busting and cast anything fish-like into the middle of it.

I'll have to hit Whalon to see if I can catch anything larger than a dink LMB.

Definite congratulations on the COTD Chuck!!!

I've yet to catch a lake smallie and I'm very much looking forward to hooking one of the lunkers in Whalon!
