DuPage Angler Breaks His

 Smallmouth 2011 Record

DuPage Angler News Room - by DuPage MWolf

This morning around 7:45 I went to Whalon. I started off slowly hopping a hula grub off the bottom which I managed to catch 5 decent largemouth with, all around 14-15" long. Suddenly a school of bass started busting on shad just within my casting range. I grabbed my other rod which had a 4" jerkbait tied on and cast straight into the frenzy. I gave it a couple twitches and then it got slammed! At first the fish didn't feel too big, but then she gave me the greatest fight I've ever had from a bass. I got her within 10 feet of the shore and then I realized... it was a smallie, and it was a HAWG. I saw she was barely hooked and I kept thinking she was surely going to get off, but I managed to lip her. She looked mean and taped in at 23" long. No one was anywhere nearby so I attempted to take my own pictures and I didn't have my scale with me either so I'm guessing she was in the 6.5 lb range, but let me know what you guys think. She was my first smallie of the year and of course... she was released to grow bigger and fight another day.

Thanks everybody! She was by far the biggest bass I've ever caught and I think it's pretty crazy that my personal best bass is now a smallmouth. I have a new goal now for the rest of the season... catch a 24+ inch smallie. I know it's rather unlikely for me to catch another huge smallie, but it's something I'm really going to work at accomplishing this year.

That's awesome, I caught my first smallie out by Starved Rock last year, pound for pound I think the only thing I could possibly compare it to was fighting a redfish. Lake smallies must be incredibly fun to catch though when they can work both vertically and horizontally. Nice catch!

You guys just make me want to spend more money and fish harder. What an awesome time you must of had. I can barely catch blue gills that have a hard time pulling a float down. All I can say is WOW!
