DuPage County - Herrick Lake Forest Preserve

DuPage Angler Chsitko's Daughter Avery With Huge Herrick Lake Bass

Mom, Dad and our 2 girls (4 yr & 6yr) headed out to Herrick Lake in DuPage County for a nice evening of fishing on 6/1/11. The Kids practiced their casting and reeled in a number of large bluegills. As their attention began to fade, I removed the weight from my soft plastic rig and tried on couple of different Senko's without any luck. I then moved to a Zoom watermelon lizard. I was fishing the north east corner of the lake prior to the boat launch.

I would skirt the lizard over the top of the vegetation and let it briefly drop before twitching quickly back to the surface. The fish hit on the flick and I handed the rod to my 6 year old who struggled to hold the tip up because of the action, but she did an excellent job of keeping the hook set for the remainder. Once she managed to get good leverage, she landed the fish in 4 minutes with a big smile. Had a couple of small bass attempt getting the lizard, but were just catching the tail. Avery was ecstatic to see the picture online.

Looks like I have to try out Herrick this year. It seems like it holds some hogs which is not so common among the forest preserves these days.

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely need one of those. I have too many pictures of my fish at bad angles, and the few times I've hauled in something really large, I've struggled to get the shot at all.

It sure is fun to look back on the pictures and remember the details of the catch! Thank god for cell phone cameras.

I love Herrick. It was very good to me in October 2011, almost never skunking me during several very short outings that I opportunistically made before work, after work or during my lunch break.

My best day there was in mid-Oct, a very windy, wet Wednesday. I ventured out at lunch with my anorak windbreaker and pulled in a nice 17” largemouth on a white Worden’s Roostertail. On the very next cast, another largemouth hit my rooster tail the moment it hit the water. That was very exciting. Both fish were released and I returned to work with smug grin. I’d mixed work with play! What could be better than that?(Other than a whole day of fishing.. :) )

I agree Brutus. I have seen some of the biggest bass of my life in Herrick Lake. People around me were calling the school carp and they were so wrong. They didn't have fishing glasses on. It is just they are so damn tough to catch (the very large bass in Herrick).

I remember when I was about 6 Wacky Bass bursts into the house and yelled I NAILED A HOG AT HERRICK! My mom had NO CLUE what he meant.

Herrick can be a pain but it has some huge, ancient beasts.

Herrick Lake so so underated. I bet you the largest bass in the Chicago area is in that bad boy. Alot of weed but also a lot of big bad bass.
